Is Diabetes Serious?

Diabetes is a serious health condition and there is no cure.

Australians underestimate the seriousness of diabetes and think they have a low risk of developing it. If left undiagnosed or poorly managed it can cause heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, amputation and impotency.

Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease, with approximately 275 people across the nation developing the condition every day.

In Western Australia alone, there are more than 90,000 people diagnosed with diabetes. For every person diagnosed, it is estimated that there is another person who is not diagnosed.

The risk of developing type 2 diabetes can be reduced by up to 60% by maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active and following a healthy eating plan. Click here to find out more.

Read about Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. There is also another type of diabetes called gestational diabetes, which may occur when a woman is pregnant. Having gestational diabetes puts women at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
